Official: Young offenders need more support

LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) _ Idaho's top juvenile corrections
administrator says juvenile offenders need more community support
immediately after they leave state custody.

Larry W. Callicutt, director of the state Department of Juvenile
Corrections, has advocated community-based programs for juvenile
offenders to prevent them from becoming repeat visitors to state
correctional facilities.

A bulk of juvenile offenders, who often come from a difficult
home situation, return to those same family and community
environments upon their release, Callicutt says.

Callicutt says his department needs to better work with other
state agencies, such as the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare,
to reduce the negative factors juvenile offenders face after
they've left state facilities.
