As Independence Day celebrations rang across Southern Idaho, there were some that were focused on giving.
Much like the group safe harbor.
Phyllis Berg says, “We started the group with the intention of opening a men's shelter, mission type, and we found that there was a need for weekend meals.”
Safe harbor held its annual barbecue in the city park this afternoon.
The group, which started in two-thousand-two, works in conjunction with soup kitchens in Saint Edwards catholic church and the salvation army in Twin Falls.
For some people, they not only don't get to celebrate the holidays, they may not even get to eat, and so for the fourth, we try to have a barbecue.
Across town, the first Assembly of God church held its annual block party today.
It’s something that we like to do just to give back to the community.
In its third year, the block party was a free event, featuring live music, free food, and fun activities.
Youth pastor Paul Versteegh says this was the church's way to give back.
Paul Versteegh says, “The community here is, is just so giving to us and so supportive of us, so we want to give some of that support back.”
