Need a tree? You could soon get one from the city.

Last night city council modified its tree enhancement program.

Now everyone within the city limits can apply to get a tree.

Before only those living in old town and the presidential streets could apply.

Before the rules said the tree had to be within the city right of way and only the older parts of the city have them.

The city wanted to maintain some control to make sure the trees were being taken care of. Now the rules have changed.

City Recreation Director Dennis Bowyer said, "We wanted to make sure its visible so we said it had to be within 25feet of your curb or if you don't have curb 25 feet from the edge of pavement in your front yard."

The city will start advertising the trees in November.

It takes several months before candidates are chosen.

The city gives away 10 trees a year and contracts with local nurseries to plant them.
