KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) _ Public health officials say three more
people in the Wood River Valley are undergoing rabies vaccines
after encounters with aggressive bats during the past week.
The Idaho Mountain Express reports one person that was bitten
and two more that may have been bitten were being vaccinated as a
precaution. The encounters happened in Bellevue, Hailey and
Ketchum.
South Central Public Health District epidemiologist Mary Jensen
says when bats have rabies, they will not act normally, including
being out in the daytime.
A bat that attacked a fisherman northwest of Hailey in July
tested positive for rabies. No rabies were captured for testing
after the recent encounters.
The rabies virus infects the central nervous system and is
almost always fatal once symptoms appear.
