Democratic Candidate Campaigns in Twin Falls

By Kim Bartlett

A democratic congressional candidate is campaigning in Twin Falls.
But in a predominantly republican state he's facing some major challenges.
Some have compared running on the democratic ticket in Idaho to tilting at windmills.
A lot of Idaho voters are staunchly republican.
But congressional candidate Jim Hansen hopes by running a different type of campaign he'll have a shot.
Wednesday Hansen ate lunch at the Twin Falls Senior Center while getting to know elderly voters.
Senior center programs administrator Jaqueline Whiting says having an official like Hansen, who could impact senior funding issues and understand local programs is important.
"I think seniors are one of the major voting groups in the country and they need to know who their politicians are," she says.
Hansen spent the rest of the day visiting local business and supporters and chatting with voters on Main Street.
He says running against Mike Simpson is a challenge.
"With so much special interest group money the incumbents tend to have large war chest to discourage competition," Hansen says.
All four members of Idaho's congressional delegation are republicans but Hansen says a democrat winning isn't totally unheard of adding, "The people deserve to see a more grass roots campaign the kind like they used to have."
Hansen says he's trying to make the election a real race with two strong candidates for voters to choose from.
