Public React to State Cutbacks

Twin Falls

By S Casey

Reactions are mixed in the Magic Valley over Idaho governor butch otter's recent budget cut proposals. Jim Wagenman, business owner says “Well, I think any kind of cuts involves a little bit of suffering on some part, it means people being laid off, people cutting back.”
Dan Vechtel, Filer school Bus driver, says “I hate to see it, but the way the economy is, I guess they have to. This past September, governor otter ordered all state agencies and institutions to cut spending by at least 27–million dollars for the upcoming fiscal year.
Governor Otter says “What we ordered was a 1 percent, a 2 percent and a 2.5 percent budget from each of the agencies.” On Tuesday, Governor Otter announced it wouldn't be enough, and the state needed to hold back as much as $41-million dollars. Wagenman says “I really believe the government should cut back on their spending and we should have a smaller government and more responsibility for the individuals.” But the Otter insists that the cuts won't have a significant impact in the Magic Valley. “The Magic Valley is one of those areas that has not seen the severity of unemployment and the severity of cutbacks that other places in Idaho have.”
