A threatened species has been found right here in the Magic Valley.
The federal bureau of reclamation says an endangered freshwater snail has been found in Snake River streams below the Minidoka dam.
The last time the Snake River physa, a freshwater snail, was known to exist in the upper Snake River region was in the 1980s.
The mollusk has been federally protected under the endangered species act since 1992.
The bureau of reclamation confirmed Friday the snail has made reappearance in its Snake River habitat.
The agency has been collecting snails during the past two years from an 11-mile section of the river.
The samples were sent to a mollusk expert at the University of Michigan and identified as Snake River physa.
