Accident closes westbound I-84 near Hazelton
About 11:30am, thick fog and snow enveloped interstate 84 two miles east of the Hazelton exit. At milepost 196, a total of nine vehicles were involved in four crashes.
The first involved three trucks in the westbound lane, one from Lowe’s Home Improvement Center, a semi truck with New Jersey license plates, and a hay truck, which scattered bales and closed the westbound lanes for two and a half hours.
Idaho State Police Sergeant Keith Thompson says another truck drove through the fence and into the barrow pit next to the frontage road. Two more vehicles collided with each other, but none of the occupants were hurt.
Thompson says emergency personnel examined a pregnant woman, who was fine, and her husband took her to the hospital.
Thompson says that the fog and snow contributed to the crashes because drivers were driving too fast for the road conditions.
Traffic was backed up for five miles while Idaho Transportation Department employees cleaned up most of the mess.
Cars and trucks were diverted onto frontage roads at Kasota exit 201 to exit 194 at Hazelton.
The rest of the five mile long traffic jam was finally released beginning at just after 2 pm.
