More people getting flu shots

Most people don't enjoy the experience of getting a shot. But according to health experts it seems like more people are deciding to get their flu vaccinations this year.

Division Director Tom Machala says, "We've given about 5500 adult vaccinations and over 1200-1300 pediatric vaccinations."

Health experts say when you also factor in doctors offices, retailers and other organizations a lot of shots are being given across the state.

Machala says when you look at the number of reported flu cases compared to the past two years at this same time, numbers are down both here in the Magic Valley and nationwide.

He says that could be attributed to more people getting their shots.

"We have more people vaccinated, less people traveling, and a better match of vaccine that helps us keep the numbers down."

And even though numbers have been down, Machala says this year we still haven't hit the peak part of the season which traditionally begins in the middle of February.

"When the peak season hits it's when you start to see more cases out there and more affected and we have always pushed for vaccinations for those who are at risk and those who usually are the ones with server complications, the young and the old."

Machala says it's never to late to get a shot, however as just a reminder it does takes two weeks for the vaccination to take affect.

The South Central Public Health District currently has 200 doses of the adult vaccine as well as 60 doses for children.
