It's tax season and while we can't escape from it, freedom is on the horizon.

"Tax Freedom Day" for Idahoans is April 12th and for the nation as a whole it's the 13th. The event marks the time and this year it's 103 days nationally, when Americans are done working to pay the obligated taxes for the year.

Idaho's Tax Freedom Day comes one day before the national day because Idaho residents pay a lower federal tax burden than the nation.

A report conducted by the Tax Foundation shows that if you add the current federal deficit to the taxes this year, a future "Tax Freedom Day" wouldn't come until May 29th.

CSI History Professor Russ Tremayne says while the lengthened period of time to pay for taxes and higher taxes themselves are both possible, he remains optimistic.

Tremayne says “The notion is that the economy improves so the solution is to rather than lengthen the economic debt, as more people make more money and people pay more taxes, the economic recovery will result in more revenue for the government and the deficit can be reduced.”
