National Guard Training

By Brittany Cooper

The Idaho National Guard took over the hills near Declo this afternoon as part of the recruit Sustainment program.
Officials say it's a program that they use to prepare recruits for basic training.
And recruit Sustainment program coordinator Ulysses Mittelstadt says the terrain was perfect for the drills.
Ulysses Mittelstadt says, "There are a lot of dips and valleys so it gives a lot of great cover from the high pine, so we also have the element of paint balling so it makes it a lot more fun."
Today's exercises were called "lane training".
One of those is a medical lane where the recruits learn how to evaluate a casualty.
Mittelstadt says, “What they're doing is to go on patrol and take a casualty. Once they evaluate that casualty and determine what's wrong."
Mittelstadt says the age range of the recruits is from 17 to 37 years old.
And they do weekend drills about once a month.
