Today Marks the Magic Valley Peace Officer Memorial Day.
Men and women of law enforcement were recognized for their service and dedication to their community. Today’s service remembered those who paid the ultimate price and lost their lives in the line of duty. Every law enforcement agency in the magic valley was represented including the U.S. Marshal. In Idaho 64 officers have been killed while serving their community.
Sheriff Tom Carter says "this is a sombering day. chief Munn and myself was just looking at this list and there’s 17 names that's been added since I got started in law enforcement. "
Several family members of those killed were present and honored with roses.
Dale O’Donnell, chaplain says "there's one of officer Bracken, Twin Falls City Police officer killed in 1939. its his daughter Virginia Odel who was at that time very young girl, and then also Cherry Molson, who's son James was killed in the line of duty for the Jerome County Sheriffs office over in Eden. both of those families were here as well as a third family. "
In 1962 President John F. Kennedy proclaimed may 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
Twin Falls City Mayor Lance Clow and Twin Falls County Chairman George Urie presented police week proclamations as well.
The key note speaker was Pat McDonald the U.S. Marshal.
A free barbeque was held for officers and their families afterward in the city park.
