Alternative Energy Holdings Incorporated wants nearly 1300 acres of land near the town of Hammett rezoned from agricultural to heavy industrial use. Supporters of the rezone say a proposed nuclear power plant would boost jobs and economic growth in the area. Opponents of the zoning change say it doesn't comply with the county comprehensive plan, and the plant would use large amounts of water.

Arlie Shaw, Elmore County Commissioner says, “This is strictly the rezone. I'm not making any decision whether I am for or against any kind of project that could go on this ground or any other.”

All this comes on the heels of a series of public hearings that have been attended by hundreds of people. The commissioners will meet again at 9 am, Monday morning, to continue their discussion on the zoning change request.

According to Elmore County Prosecuting Attorney Kristina Shindele, “One of the things they must address is whether the application for a rezone complies with the Elmore County comprehensive plan. And the second factual question is whether or not the proposed rezone application has an adverse effect on the provision of public services.”

Schindele says those public services would include roads, schools, fire protection, and police services. She says those factors will help the commissioners decide whether to approve or deny the application.
