Tours Offered of Hunt Camp

Jerome, ID

By Rachael Giffoni

Rangers are offering guided tours through the month of August of the old Minidoka relocation center, also known as the Hunt Camp.

It is here, from 1942 to 1945, that Japanese Americans were interned during World War II.
Rangers are offering in-depth views about life at the camp, and what it was like for those interned there.
Under provisions of President Roosevelt’s executive order 9-0-6-6, all Japanese Americans were excluded from the West Coast.
Minidoka housed over 9,000 people.
Park guide Jennifer Hamilton says the site is very educational.

“Hopefully people can learn both the importance of the site and why we're trying to preserve it. And it's educational for future generations. It's not taught in schools as well as it probably should be, and this way we can get the word out and hopefully keep something like this from every happening again.”

Tours will happen every Saturday in August.
When you come to the site, be sure to wear sturdy footwear, and bring some water.
