H1N1 Vaccinations: Nasal Spray Vs. Injection

By Rachael Giffoni

More H1N1 vaccinations will be shipped to the Magic Valley next week, both nasal sprays called Flu–Mist, and injections. And many people wonder, what’s the best type of vaccination to get? According to a local doctor, it depends on your age, and what you are allergic to.

Dr. Greg Wickern said, "Flu–Mist is very good for people between the ages of 2 years to 49 years. If you are younger than that, or older than that, you should get the injectable. "

Dr. Wickern said, you can see some reactions with the nasal spray, including a stuffed, runny nose and a slight fever. But he says, that shouldn't deter anyone from getting vaccinated.

"Your chances of having major complications from getting H1N1 far exceed any of the problems we have seen from vaccinations for decades now. Bottom line, the vaccine is a lot safer than getting the virus itself."

Officials at the South Central Public Health District tell us they hope to hold their first mass immunization clinic next week.
