Students Bring Life to Jackson's Thriller

By Rachael Giffoni

On December 2nd, 1983, Michael Jackson released a song that soon launched into world-wide popularity, and had a profound effect on popular culture. Today at the College of Southern Idaho, jazz students brought life to the classic song and dance involving zombies.

Thriller has entranced the living, and the dead, since the early 80's. And now, for the second year in a row, students are recreating the song and dance.

CSI Dance Instructor Julie Wright-Leggett said, "It was such a great hit, and they did such a great job, we figured we would turn it into a tradition. It's turning out to be something really fun.

Behind the scenes before the show, students turn into zombies.

Wright-Leggett said, "We started practicing about 9 weeks ago - and I meet with them 2 hours a week, we go over choreography, we go over character, we go over how to set their makeup for their costumes."

You can't have the perfect zombie without a little blood. Students use a mixture of chocolate and strawberry syrup to create the effect.

For students and teachers alike, this is a chance to show off their moves, and to have a little fun with their creative sides.

Wright-Leggett said, "All summer long the kids were exposed to a Michael they didn't know, because of all the media attention. To be exposed to him, they feel they have a little bit more connection to about who he was - so it does make it a bit more fun."

It's weeks of work for a few minutes of entertainment. But it's a job, even the King of Pop, would be proud of.
