Jury trial set for Challis woman accused of veh. manslaughter; Jerome man in jail for defrauding unemployment insurance

A jury trial date has been set for a 33-year old woman from Challis who is charged with vehicular manslaughter. Heather Swain is accused of causing an accident on Highway 93 in Jerome County in July 2009 that killed 65-year old Frank Orth Junior of Wendell. A pre-trial conference was held this week, and so far no deal has been reached to resolve the case; a two day jury trial is set to begin on June 1, 2010.

In other area court news, a Jerome man has been jailed for defrauding the Unemployment Insurance Program of nearly $8,000. Richard Lee Roadcap, 49, will spend six months on a rider program; after which 5th District Judge John Butler will evaluate his case to determine whether Roadcap should be placed on probation. Roadcap was originally sentenced to two to five years in prison.
