92 Year Old Pearl Harbor Survivor Honored
Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) 71 years ago today, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii during World War II.
William Bridges was just 21 years old at the time. Today the Veterans of Foreign Wars honored Bridges for serving his country. He now lives at Bridgeview Estates. Twin Falls Vice Mayor Don Hall presented the WW II veteran with a commemorative coin.
Bridges says, "There were a few misses that fell close, but they did hit us with one. It went through the ship. If came in about two feet of me, and went right on through the ship."
Bridges was aboard the USS Raleigh when a torpedo hit the ship. He ran to the gun nest, and managed to shoot down several incoming Japanese planes. Bridges says as far as he knows, he fired the first American shots at Pearl Harbor.
