Mountain Home residents react to cancellation of fireworksMountain Home
Last night we told you that three firefighters were sent to the hospital after they were preparing for Mountain Home's annual fireworks display.
The fireworks show ended up being cancelled for the Fourth of July, Today we spoke with residents on their reaction to the cancellation. In this patriotic community of Mountain Home, fireworks are an annual tradition. Owyhee Business Association President Michael Stoecker said, "Everyone was expecting to go to the fireworks about 10, 10:30." But on Saturday afternoon, according to the Elmore County Sheriff's office, as crews were setting up for tonight's big display, one of the shells went off in a firefighter's hands, setting up chain reaction that ended up hurting three firefighters and setting off seventy-five percent of the fireworks. "Felt like an earthquake, yeah it was crazy." Three firefighters were taken to the hospital; two were treated and released while one was in stable condition. It's unknown what the status of that firefighter is at this time. Mountain Home resident Doris Longmore said, "the one that was carrying the one that went off, he could have been hurt read bad." Officials ended up canceling tonight's Fourth of July fireworks celebration. For the residents of Mountain Home, that was difficult to hear. Mountain Home resident Lucille Gregory said, "It was quite a lost because that's something that most people do watch." But festivities in the park continued on today as there was a car show and a number of vendors. An event, that's put on by the Owyhee Business Association. "We sell Christmas trees at Christmas time to keep this park as free as we can." Michael Stoecker said that a number of residents from the area and even neighboring towns wanted to pitch in so that there still could be a fireworks show. That just goes to show the strength of support and patriotic spirit of Southern Idaho residents. Comments ( |
