A Gingerbread Masterpiece At Cactus Petes

By KMVT News

Jackpot, Nevada ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Every artist has a signature work of art.

But they're not usually edible!

Meet Chef Washington, the mastermind behind this gingerbread village.

"About 220 hours, I've been working since September," he says.

Sure to put your premade gingerbread houses to shame, Washington bakes the gingerbread from scratch before he assembles it to perfection.

"I use about 40 lbs of dough," he explains.

A gondola, railway system, gazebo, ice skating rink... This year's Dickson Village has it all.

"I like a lot of detail, not many people have patience, but I do. I like a lot of detail and kind of complicated things because that's what pushes me to be the best," Washington says.

And seeing the joy this village brings to others?

Well, that's just the icing on the roof.

"That’s my reward, seeing people's reactions. It makes you do even better. I have been doing this for many years and every year it's always different, no matter what I do. It's always different, it has to change you know," he explains.

"The guests who have come in and stand at our check in window and notice the display, and everyone notices something different. All of the time it sparks conversations about the holidays, or maybe some of the decorations they have at their house," Kris Ann Brown, PR Manager at Cactus Petes, points out.

The mini confectionary community can't be missed in Cactus Petes' lobby.

The gingerbread village will be on display through the end of December.
