'Accountable Care' Will Improve Health, Medical Services
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) St. Luke's Clinic Coordinated Care has been selected as one of just over 100 new "Accountable Care Organizations" in Medicare.
Right now most doctors and hospitals charge patients for each individual service they provide. But there's a new shift away from that way of doing business. The new organizations share with Medicare any savings they make by lowering the growth in healthcare costs.
Dr. David Pate, CEO of St. Luke's Healthcare System, says, "Instead of fee for service, it's based on rewards for meeting outcomes, and for making care less costly, which is what we have to do in this country."
Pate says the change won't happen overnight, but keeping patients healthy will save some very expensive healthcare costs in the long run. He says that will benefit hospitals, doctors, and their patients.
