"It's a huge day for this area and in my opinion it's a huge day for the state of Idaho."
At 1:25 this afternoon the inaugural united airlines flight touched down at Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey.
The new direct service from San Francisco to Hailey means big things for not only the Wood River Valley but the entire Magic Valley.
"Tourism is a big part of the Blaine County economy, it's a big part of the magic valley economy. Developing new service doesn't happen every day, a lot of people have put a lot of work into making this happen. And so to be able to create direct air flight service over the long term is really a benefit... and we're very happy about it.
Said Blaine County commissioner, Larry Schoen.
Not only will the new flight impact the economy, but the type of aircraft being used is a big boost for the airport and the community.
This is the first jet service that we've had her in probably over 15 years. It's the first regional jet that's provided service into this airport. It is really the first step into the future, it is the aircraft of the future... it’s just absolutely huge."
Said Friedman Airport Manager, Rick Baird.
To celebrate the momentous occasion the valley came out in full support.
For the passengers on the inaugural flight into Hailey... inside the terminal they found cake, champagne and even a choir waiting them.
One of those passengers was Ketchum’s very own Mayor, Randy Hall.
"I wanted to be on the inaugural flight and it was a great success. The community is very excited and I'm very honored to be on this first flight."
Said Ketchum City Mayor, Randy Hall.
And, the excitement on the ground was rivaled only by that onboard the historic flight.
"There was a big roar of applause... it was very exciting for a lot of people to be able to fly directly in. And to welcome our visitors here with this kind of reception is just indicative of how great this community is."
A warm welcome for a flight at the forefront of big changes.
