Are Space Heaters Worth the Heat?

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) More and more people are investing in space heaters to add some extra warmth to their homes.

But what safety precautions need to be taken in order to be safe and warm this winter?

Space heaters are a huge culprit of fire during the winter season.

The unit does require a lot of electricity and is advised to have a 3 feet of clearing surrounding it to prevent fires.

The unit should also only be on for a short amount of time and should always be monitored.

"What I would recommend is use them as little as possible. Use them until you're comfortable, turn the unit off don't leave it unattended. We've had a lot of them where the animals have tipped it over and caught something that's ignitable on fire, then ultimately the house," explains Capt. Mitchell Brooks, Twin Falls Fire Department.

The fire department advises that when using a space heater, place it away from extension cords.
