Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) With the summer ending, Tuesday marks the first day of school for many students in the Magic Valley.
It’s important to remember backpack safety as your little scholars head out the door.
More than 24,000 people were treated in U.S. hospitals and doctors' offices for backpack-related injuries last year, according to the consumer product safety commission.
More than 9,000 of those patients were aged 5 to 18, parents and doctors recommend children should carry no more than 15 percent to 20 percent of their body weight.
"It is recommended that kids carry backpacks that they can carry using both straps to distribute the weight. Parents should watch to make sure their kids are maintaining good posture when carry their backpacks going from school” said Brady Dickinson, Twin Falls School District.
Twin Falls School District officials encourage kids to utilize their classroom desk and locker.
