Beaver Sculpture Honors Local Soldier's Memory
Hansen, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) A soldier who was killed eight years ago in Iraq now has a memorial in his parents' front yard in Hansen.
The "Combat Beaver" wood carving is five and a half feed tall and weighs almost 500 pounds. It was carved by Ray Schultz, who creates wood bears for the Black Bear Diner. The restaurant chain is based in Redding, California, and recently opened a new diner in Boise.
Anna Bonifacio, the soldier's mother, says, "I basically wanted it done as a remembrance and whatnot. He deserves it."
SSG Jerry Bonifacio Jr. was killed in action by a suicide bomber in Iraq eight years ago. Black Bear Diner is paying for the cost of carving and transporting the wood sculpture, as a way of saying thanks to the US Army and the soldier's family.
"Beaver" was the soldier's nickname when he was growing up.
