Beware The Green Dot International Lottery Scam

By Jay Michaels

Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Scammers want to stay a step ahead of you – to make sure they get your money before you realize it.

In the latest new scam, you get a phone call that says you've won an international lottery. The scammer tells you to go buy a cash card at a convenience store, and call them back with that number. They say they'll put your lottery winnings onto that card, but they'll do the exact opposite.

Dale Dixon, CEO of the Better Business Bureau in Boise, says, "If a person does that, they will lose all of the money on that cash card, because the scam artist won't put anything on it. They'll take everything out of it. And that's the way they're perpetrating the scam and getting their cash."

This scam is also called the Green Dot scam, which is a kind of cash card. The caller will tell you the lottery you've one is from Jamaica, Great Britain, or some other foreign country.

Dixon says federal law won't allow Americans to win a foreign lottery.
