Blaine County Sheriff Walt Femling talks about stepping down from his position
After 24 years, the Blaine County sheriff is retiring. Walt Femling is stepping down from the position as of March 1st, to concentrate on his health.
For Walt Femling, becoming sheriff seemed a normal path. He said, "I grew up in law enforcement and it was a career I always knew I was gonna do that."
Among his list of accomplishments, Femling has truly enjoyed watching Blaine County grow. He said, "This county has more than doubled in size since I've been sheriff and all the challenges that come with growth.. in traffic.. crime.. drugs and gangs and our approach every year is to look ahead to what the next challenge will be. Just meeting those challenges in a tourist-oriented community.. a new group of people coming in every week."
For the sheriff, the biggest thing he says he'll miss is the people, and also coming in the jail and his office everyday. But it doesn't mean he'll lose that itch to fight crime.
He said, "That first time I retire and the big event happens and we hear sirens.. you're gonna want to go for the door and be part of the county, but you're gonna have to sit back and watch. That will be tough."
Although he calls it a "difficult" decision to resign, Femling promises he's not leaving for another job or even leaving Blaine County. While he may be hanging up his badge, he's not giving up what's in his heart.
