Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Summer time means mosquito season and a group of volunteers in Twin Falls are fighting the bug in an unconventional way.

You probably have tried using bug spray to battle mosquitoes but who knew a Bluegill could do the job.

"It's part of our mosquito control operation we look at all the tools that are out there one of them is fish really small Bluegill we put them in waters that have mosquito larva and the mosquito larva is food for the fish” Kirk Tubbs, Manger Abatement District.

Mosquitoes spend over half their life cycle in standing water. Fish will be released into ponds throughout Twin Falls County.

"Some along Rock Creek, a lot of these canal pounds, a lot of ponds in the subdivisions were they have irrigation water that flows in their season pounds in there” Kirk Tubbs, Manger Abatement District.

Volunteers of all ages came out to be part of the fun.

"We are catching and measuring fish” said Andrew Noh, Volunteer.

"As each kid is measuring the fish in the bucket, I'm just tallying the fish we are keeping” Joan Hurlock, Volunteer.

Catching more than 500 fish is what the pest abatement district did.
