Tense Moments In A Minidoka County Courtroom
Rupert, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) A Burley man was sentenced today for involuntary manslaughter.
Michael Jared Thompson was arrested in December of 2011.
Police said Thompson is responsible for the death of Burley resident Michael Kenneth Blair, 21.
A witness told officers Thompson cocked a nine-millimeter handgun and pointed it back over his shoulder while driving.
Blair then put the gun in his mouth and it went off.
Michael Jared Thompson walked into the courtroom for his sentence with heavy emotion and tense hearts.
"I just want you to know that I'm truly sorry,” said Michael Jared Thompson.
Although Thompson wants forgiveness, the family is still in pain.
"We'll always hate you and even when I'm too tired to do that, I'll never forgive you. It seems to me all you care about is yourself, you destroyed so many lives here, think about all the lives you've destroyed,” said Laura Blair, Victims mother.
The judge sentenced Thompson to 15-years behind bars with five years fixed.
The Blair family told Idaho’s First News they have mixed feelings on the sentence and still in shocked their son is dead.
"This was a tragic case and it affected the community in a lot of ways, but we don't see a lot of shootings. We do take weapons off the road,” said Sheriff Kevin Halverson, Minidoka County.
The Thompson family had no comment to give Idaho’s First News about the trial.
