CSI Students Preparing For Graduation
Keynote Speaker Announced
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) – The College of Southern Idaho will hold its 48th annual commencement for graduates at 7 p.m. Friday, May 16 in the Gym. Chief Judge of Idaho’s Court of Appeals, Sergio A Gutierrez of Boise will be the keynote speaker.
Judge Gutierrez is a former school drop-out and farmworker. While in the Job Corps, he earned his GED which he says is his proudest accomplishment. “It gave me a new start in life,” he says. Gutierrez earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Boise State University, his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California Hastings Law School, and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Northwest Nazarene University. He is active in community service, having been honored by the Voices of Faith Human Rights, Boise State Distinguished Alumni, College of Western Idaho, Idaho Community Foundation, the Governor’s Coordinating Council for Families and Children, the National Job Corps Association Board, and Treasure Valley Reading Foundation to name a few. In 2002, the judge was also listed by the Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the 100 most influential Latinos in America.
According to the CSI Registrar’s office, nearly 1200 applications have been filed for graduation. More than 400 graduates typically choose to take part in the commencement exercises. The exact number in the procession will not be known until graduation night.
CSI graduates are being asked this year to try to limit their number of guests in the gym to no more than four. Guests should plan to find seats before 7 p.m. as it is often very crowded. A reception with refreshments catered by Aramark Food Service will be available to everyone in the Taylor Building Cafeteria immediately following the commencement program, which is expected to conclude between 8:30 and 9 p.m.
