Coast-to-Coast Ride Raises Suicide Awareness

Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) The national suicide rate has been increasing over the past decade.

According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control, nearly one million people attempt to take their own life each year.

To raise awareness about suicide, a former CSI basketball player is biking coast-to-coast this summer.

Delicia Jernigan is on a mission.

"I'm hoping to inspire and give hope to other people who have lost someone that they loved," said Delicia Jernigan, So Many Roads Tour.

Earlier this month she began a cross country journey dedicated to raising awareness about suicide statistics, the survivors they leave behind, and bringing inspiration to anyone that has suffered from depression and loss.

"I started in Portland, Oregon on June 1st and I'm making my way to Portland, Maine. The ride was inspired by the loss of my younger brother Anthony, who committed suicide two years ago. He was only 21–years old," said Jernigan.

The latest suicide data dates back to 2009.

That year, the CDC reported nearly 37,000 suicide deaths in the U.S.

"Nationally, suicides are about 12 per 100,000. Here in Idaho it's closer to 19 or 20 per 100,000 in population," said Lori Stewart, Co-chair, SPAN.

In 2009, Idaho had the fourth highest suicide rate in the nation. And, Twin Falls had the third highest suicide rate in the state. Just this year, SPAN, the Suicide Prevention Action Network, placed signs on the Perrine Bridge, hoping to lower those statistics.

"The signs at the bridge were really a message of hope. We really want people to know that suicide is not the answer that there are options out there," said Stewart.

If Jernigan has one message to convey to those who have lost a loved one to suicide, it's that life goes on.

"He was definitely one of the best people that I had the chance of getting to know and to love. So, you know without him around we can really tell a difference in our lives. So, he's definitely missed," said Jernigan.
