College Students Having A Tough Time Landing Student Teaching Jobs
Declo, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Now a days it's getting harder for college students who are majoring in education to find a student teaching job.
Leah Tanner attends Idaho State University and this is her first semester student teaching at Declo High School.
Becoming a student teacher though can be a challenge.
"She contacted me in May and my first thought was no, because of the high states testing going on and the new onset of common core coming through,” said Kasey Heward, Declo High School.
An issue many college students are facing is teachers being reliable for student test scores and performance.
If the student teacher doesn't meet requirements, the teacher is responsible.
"I changed my mind because I thought someone gave me a chance and how else will she learn if no one else gives her a shot,” said Heward.
Tanner believes this is a once in a lifetime experience.
"It's been really good; the people here are really open. Mrs. Heward is awesome and I love teaching with her and she's been a really good mentor and it's been a great experience,” said Leah Tanner, Student Teacher.
For the student it's about learning in different ways.
"We experience things differently when we have two teachers. She teaches differently than our regular teacher and we learn more” said McKinley Payne, student.
A teacher who believes in opportunity and now is passing her skills on to a future teacher.
Cassia School District officials say, they are always looking for student teachers and they always hope to hire them.
