Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) If you live in the Magic Valley, black flies are sure to be an insect you have noticed.
One mile of river can produce up to 1 billion black flies per day.
A treatment program is currently operating in Twin Falls to target these populations.
Winter treatments are conducted every year with the application of a commercial insecticide that has no effects on people, fish, or livestock.
Kirk Tubbs with the Pest Abatement District explains the process…
"Black flies experience very rapid growth. It usually starts out very slow in the spring and then increases throughout the season. It doesn't eliminate black flies; you're still going to see black flies. This is a way to help reduce those numbers."
The winter provides an opportunity to get an early start on management, and is one of the most cost-effective times to treat.
