(CASSIA COUNTY, ID) - The Cassia County Sheriff’s Office has captured two people for supposedly stealing copper wires.

Sheriff Randy Kidd said the combined use of technology and good old law enforcement, led to the arrest of copper wire thieves.

Jorge Ernest Castillo of Burley and a 15-year-old male juvenile were arrested on Sunday for grand theft.

Police said they embedded copper wire with a GPS tracker and left the wire out in the rural area of Cassia County.

The tracker alerts law enforcement when the wire moves.

Police said they followed the directions provided by the GPS tracker and located the suspect vehicle south of Burley.

The wire containing the embedded tracker was located in the back of the pickup. The arrests of the 2 suspects followed.

This is the second time the use of the GPS trackers have led to multiple arrests in the last couple of years.

“As Sheriff of Cassia County, I will continue to deploy as many of these trackers as we can afford too. There is a cost to the purchase of the tracker and the activation of the tracking system. This has proven to be the most effective way of combating and catching the copper thieves operating in our county. Let this be a warning to the potential copper thieves, the next roll of wire that you take; maybe the one that has our tracker embedded in it, and you will be next,” said Sheriff Randy Kidd, Cassia County.
