Could Explosion At Fertilizer Plant Happen Here?

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) The explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant Wednesday night has been cause for concern in the Magic Valley.

The explosion damaged or destroyed dozens of homes.

Texas governor Rick Perry has declared Mclennan County a disaster area.

But could this type of disaster happen here in our area?

The Valley Wide Cooperative is a local company that deals with fertilizer daily and has an office in Rupert.

Officials say what happened in Texas couldn't happen here.

General Manager of Valley Agronomics Richard Lloyd says, "The primary fertilizer for growing any plants is nitrogen. But there's different forms of nitrogen. Ammonium nitrate is one form. Probably the most important is we don't carry it at any of our facilities across Idaho or Eastern Oregon. We don't carry ammonium nitrate which is likely the problem which caused the explosion down in Texas."

Texas officials say more than fifteen people have died.. And many others are still missing.
