Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT) - The blaze that burned nearly 600 acres in the Snake River Canyon is in the mop-up phase according to officials.

At about 2:30 Thursday afternoon, a fire started on the south side of the canyon just north of Twin Falls

Crews from the Twin Falls Fire Department along with the Bureau of Land Management, the Sawtooth Hotshots and Salmon Tract crews battled the blaze, both on the ground and from the air.

According to preliminary reports, the fire 'may have' been caused by a cigarette butt tossed on the ground.

Homes on the canyon were evacuated as a precaution, because the fire started moving towards the structures.

According to Twin Falls Fire Department Battalion Chief Jack Barnes, one house did receive some fire damage, but most homes received mostly minor property damage.

Officials on the Jerome side of the canyon were keeping a close eye on the blaze, watching for any hot ash that may drift over.
