Crowning Glory: A Homecoming Tale

By Aimee Burnett

Hailey, Idaho (KMVT-TV) It's a story you don't hear too often, but when you do it leaves an impact.

A local high school senior with down syndrome was recently crowned homecoming king.

"Your 2012 Homecoming King Nathan Lago."

The crowd went wild as Wood River High School senior Nathan Lago was crowned Homecoming King.

"Homecoming was pretty emotional for everyone.”

It's a moment Nathan, who has down syndrome, won't soon forget.

"It's good. Everybody loves me," said Nathan.

"It makes me feel very proud, very proud of Nathan and our community," said Tifny Lago, Nathan’s mother.

Nathan has been going to school in Blaine County his entire life.

"Well, I think from the time he was in preschool there's always been a culture of inclusion. And, it's never been a fight for us to be included. He's always been accepted by his peers and staff," said Tifny.

For those that know Nathan well, seeing him crowned by his peers was no surprise.

"I know how much these kids love him and I see it every day. But, I think it's always kind of a surprise to see a whole student body rally around someone. But, why wouldn't they when you're as cool as Nathan Lago” said Natalie Nauman, Nathan’s teacher.
Senior Trevor Brand is one of the students who rallied behind Nathan.

They've been classmates and friends since third grade.

"Nathan...I don't know? He's a pretty normal guy, likes to have a good time, hang out," said Trevor Brand.

"I love Trevor. He's my best buddy ever," said Nathan.

"Best buds...we're best buds," said Brand.

Nathan is raising money for the Special Olympics and Sun Valley Adaptive Sports for his senior project, which is called Man Versus Food.

If you'd like to participate in a rib cook–off to help Nathan on November 17th you can contact him at or Kelly Choma at 578-5436.
