Sun Valley, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV) - Fish enthusiasts pooled together for a sold out screening of the award winning documentary, DamNation. The event was held at the Sun Valley Opera House on Tuesday evening. The movie follows a young adventurer who takes the audience on a wild ride through the changing currents of dams. After an era of dam building, selected dams are now being removed, primarily to restore salmon runs.
Idaho’s Rivers United and the Save Our Salmon Coalition organized the event. They say the thesis of the film is not that all dams should be removed. However, they believe all dams deserve a second look. In their view, a lot of dams are very low value, high cost, and need to be reevaluated. DamNation directly addresses Idaho salmon and the potential to remove outdated dams that now limit the Idaho salmon recovery effort.
The screening was treated to a very special guest, Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard. The environmentally friendly clothing entrepreneur is a self proclaimed dam buster and produced the documentary.
“The main thing I’m trying to get across is responsibility. I mean, when I was a kid, I was taught that you make a mess, you clean it up. Unfortunately, that doesn’t apply to corporations. They can put open pit mines and they can put dams up, when then they bankrupt the company or whatever, or their water district, and they walk away and leave it up to the tax payers to clean up,” said Chouinard.
An audience Q&A session with Mr. Chouinard immediately followed the screening. Due to popular demand, event organizers say there might be another showing of DamNation in the near future.
