'Death by Chocolate' Returns For 8th Year

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) It's time once again for one of the Twin Falls Rotary Club's major fundraisers. It's the 8th annual "Death by Chocolate" which is held at the Canyon Crest Event Center in Twin Falls.

"Death by chocolate?" What a way to go! But the event's founder is quick to point out that in eight years, no one's actually died from eating chocolate here.

Jill Skeem says, "We have five categories, cake, candy, cookie, brownie, and unique dessert. We have five vendors in each category. And the public comes in, they get a ballot, they get to taste all the chocolates in every category and vote for the best one."

Vendors whip up a thousand pieces of chocolate for each category they enter. All told, that adds up to 25,000 pieces of chocolate decadence.

Dana Nichols, Chef at Wynwood, says, "We're doing two categories. Right now I'm doing the chocolate candy, and it is a peanut chew covered in dark chocolate and in milk chocolate."

The money raised by the Twin Falls Rotary Club's Death by Chocolate event is donated to local charities. Part of the money raised this year will go toward the Main Avenue Splash Park and Plaza in Downtown Twin Falls.

These chocolatiers aren't above adding a few popular secret ingredients, though.

Jacob Pool, Executive Chef at Hilton Garden Inn, says, "Bacon. Bacon in the chocolate. Very small pieces, adds just a little bit of smokiness, a little bit of saltiness to the sweetness, and cuts it really nicely."

Death by Chocolate will be this Thursday, January 31st at the Canyon Crest Event Center in Twin Falls. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $20 at the door.
