Domestic Violence Mars Holiday Season

By Jay Michaels

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Sometimes celebrating the holidays can have a dark side, especially when it comes to domestic violence.

In the last two months, Twin Falls County has received almost 30 calls related to domestic violence. Ten of those reports resulted in cases being filed, but only two of those cases led to arrests.

The most common day for domestic violence reports is Superbowl Sunday.

Senior Deputy Jay Wiggins says, "That's when we get the highest reports of domestics. A lot of alcohol is involved during those times, stress is a little bit higher. We have a lot of people gathering. Sometimes is can just be stressful."

In the last year, Wiggins explains the Twin Falls County Sheriff's Office has received almost 200 domestic violence calls, with 26 cases filed, and 17 people arrested.

He indicates this month's figures are about average for this time of year.
