Early Season Skiing Best in Years

Sun Valley, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Ski season is off and running in Sun Valley and it could end up being one for the record books.

Snow, snow and more snow, that's what the mountains have been experiencing over the last 72 hours.

And, local skiers are taking advantage of mother nature's bounty.

"The snow has been fantastic all year, since opening day we've had powder," said Brian Poster, Sun Valley resident.

The Sun Valley Resort opened Thanksgiving day with twelve runs and three lifts on baldy and two runs and one lift on dollar.

"We had over 1,000 people at the resort Friday night and over 1,000 Saturday night and a lot of happy faces," said Jack Sibbach, Sun Valley Resort spokesman.

And, that's not likely to change any time soon.

In the last seventy–two hours nearly three feet of snow has been added to the base bringing the total to forty–seven inches at the top.

"For this time of year the skiing is just exceptional," said Sibbach.

The resort hasn't been able to make a lot of its own snow this year because the temperatures have just been too warm.

Dollar Mountain is closed as a result, but resort officials expect to reopen the mountain on December 8th.

"We're looking forward to Dollar opening up and their new terrain park should be really fun," said Peta Verhaeghe, Sun Valley resident.

The terrain park is just one of the new additions.

Athletes nationwide are anticipating the opening of the super pipe, hoping for an opportunity to come and train.

"That's where we have our freestyle terrain and our jumps and the super pipe that's twenty–two foot super pipe this year, which is Olympic standard," said Sibbach.

It's expected to be up and running by Christmas.

But, for now skiers are enjoying the fresh powder early in the season.

"Last year was a little light early in the year, but there's enough snow now to open up the bowls or Seattle Ridge or anything. I think we're in for a banner ski year," said Poster.

The 77th winter season at the resort has some of the best skiing and riding in the West.
