Give us a smile!

WENDELL, ID (KMVT) There are T-shirts that say, "Smile – it makes people wonder what you're up to."
And whether you're mischievous or not, a local man's doing all he can to get us to grin.

Bill Huffer, 62, of Wendell was in a car wreck when he was 17 years old. But he says the aftereffects of that accident didn't bother him at all until ten years ago.

Bill Huffer, the Smile Man, says, "It wiped out pretty much my short term memory. I'd been management my entire life. It's hard to manage people when, what's your name again?"

Huffer's cousin lives in Jerome, so he moved here to Idaho, and now lives at the Magic Valley Manor in Wendell. Practically every day he rides his bicycle just down the street to the old Bert Harbaugh parking lot, and shows people driving by his very simple "Smile" sign.

He says, "Out of 100 people, I'll maybe get 30 smiles, 60 waves, and the rest of 'em hardcore, they're not gonna smile for anything."

Huffer says if you have dark tinted windows he can't see into, he just imagines that you're laughing so hard you can barely stay on the road. He says using his "Smile" sign makes him feel good, and feel like he's contributing something to make his corner of the world a better place.

He says, "I've done charity work my entire life, and to me this is almost like charity work. Maybe I'm the charity, I don't know. But I get more out of it, I guarantee you, that anybody else driving down the road. Some of the people come by, big toothy grin, and that just about gets me out of my chair giggling."
