Hagerman School District Asking Voters To Pass Supplemental Levy

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV) With education budget cuts happening across the gem state, the Hagerman School District is taking a hit.

District officials are now asking voters to decide on a supplemental levy in May.

The levy is needed for the Hagerman school district to maintain the quality of education for students.

"We've done everything that we can in order to maintain our fund balance and we need help now,” said Superintendent Ty Jones, Hagerman School Districts.

The state of Idaho cut funding for the Hagerman School District over the past four years, now the district is in desperate need of money.

"As we have dwindled down our fund balance we have actually had to take a look at the books and see what we have to do to make our district whole and that's why we've decided to ask the voters for $150,000” said Jones.

Since 2009, state revenues for the school district dropped by more than seven-hundred thousand dollars.

"We would like to add one classroom teacher; we have a very large second grade class. Some of the money will go towards textbooks that we need to buy. We haven't bought textbooks for ten years and really need those to catch up to where we need to be."

For the last four years the district has cut 5-teacher positions, and cut 6.2% of teacher, administrator, and coaches' salaries, also eliminated buying textbooks, paying for field trips, and athletic safety equipment.

"We are already cutting as much as we possibly can; we've done a really good job of allowing our teachers the things that they need to be successful in the classroom” said Jones.

If the levy does not pass, the district would lose four teacher aides, cut supplies, and not buy new textbooks.

"I know we're asking the voters to do something that is unpleasant and raise their taxes” said Jones.

Voters will decide the future of the school district.

The levy election will be held on May 21st, 2013 - it will pass with 50-percent plus one vote.
