Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) With chick and duckling season is here, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is urging everyone to eat safe this spring. More people are raising chickens and ducks at their homes.

Officials want everyone to know the risks of salmonella, a potential serious bacterial infection from birds. Chicks, ducklings and other poultry can carry salmonella germs in their droppings and on their bodies.

Salmonella germs can cause people to get sick and it can even be life threatening. If you raise chickens or ducks, it is important to wash your hands. Health officials also say to never take live poultry inside your house and to clean all contaminated surfaces.
