Here Come Christmas Mailing Deadlines
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) If you haven't already, you may want to get a jump on sending your Christmas packages. That's because the US Postal Service is expecting a major surge in the number of packages being mailed this year.
420 million packages this year. That's 12 percent more than last Christmas. But the Post Office is ready.
If you're mailing a Christmas package to a military location, you'll need to have your package in by December 10th. The deadline for sending international packages is the 12th.
Twin Falls Postmaster John Wiest says, "If you're going to be shipping standard post in the US, which is our cheapest product, we would like you to have that in by December 14th. If you're going to ship regular First Class, whether it's letters or parcels, usually December 20th is the date we'd like you to have it in."
In other words, the sooner, the better. But if you insist on waiting, the Priority Mail deadline is the 21st of December, and if you use Priority Mail Express, it's the 23rd.
Local resident Candis McFrederick says, "We have relatives in state, but not out of state. We're sending our packages about 300 miles."
You can save gas money and time by ordering boxes and other shipping materials online at usps.com . You can also print out your postage and schedule a pickup. Your postal carrier will come to your door to pick up the package you're sending.
Local resident Maria Pizano says, "We have family in Mexico, but this year we're going, so we didn't send packages."
Aleah Montalban says she isn't ready. "I haven't really started much yet, but I'm planning on doing it. Not as much this year."
They're gearing up for one of the busiest months in US Postal Service history.
So make sure you get your packages down to the post office, or in the mail, as soon as you can.
