Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) One local Twin Falls High School senior is on her way to becoming one of the nation's best scholars.

Rachel Bowyer is a nominee for the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars program.

Now in its 50th year, it is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors.

The scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in the community.

Over 3 thousand candidates were selected for their exceptional College Board SAT and ACT assessments.

For Rachel, being one of the over 3 thousand to just be nominated is a high honor.

"I'm actually really honored to be a part of the scholar community... just because it is the top scoring students out of the entire nation... many of them come from some really prestigious schools. It feels great to be a nominee from Idaho," she says.

If Rachel is accepted as one of the only 140 actual scholars nationwide, those 140 students will receive a paid trip to Washington, DC... with an opportunity to go to the White House and meet the president.

Even if she isn't accepted as a scholar, she already has plans for the future.

Next year she will be attend Rice University in Houston as a freshman.
