JEROME, Idaho (KMVT-TV) - Several homes are damaged in Jerome after water breached a canal on the east side of town.

The sounds of pumps permeate the air in Jerome, as desperate homeowners frantically work to remove the water from their homes.

For some of them it's becoming an all too common occurrence.

"I got a phone call from my friend that lives here at this house just after seven this morning saying that she had flooding and I thought not again," said Cindy Walter, Jerome Resident.

This is the second time in about a year Cindy Walter has rushed to her friend’s aide, but this time is much worse than before.

"Three hundred thousand gallons, so it's a tremendous amount of water. It's amazing," said Walter.

The city has placed rock barriers in front of homes along 16th Avenue East; however, the homes aren't out of danger yet, if the rain continues, the flooding could get worse.

"Minimal damage inside my house. We were able to get up and get it taken care of quickly compared to other neighbors who have upwards of 4 or 5 feet of water," said John Wyatt, Jerome Resident.

The effects are also evident on the roads.

"This is appearing to be a major sink hole,” said Wyatt.

So what's to blame for this mess?

"The major cause was a main canal outside the city breached its bank and started flooding. And as you can see behind me here it was more water than the canal can handle," said Walt Appell, City of Jerome Public Works Director.

People are demanding changes be made.

"This won't be covered under any insurance so I think someone better be doing something about it and getting this problem fixed they told them that it was fixed," said Walter.

"Storm drains installed," said Wyatt.

But, for now, the clean up will likely take time and money.

The breach reportedly happened a half a mile east of Tiger Dr. on 16th Avenue East around 9 p.m. Friday night.

Jerome got well over an inch of rain in the last 24 hours.

Flooding was also reported in Hagerman and Albion.
