How Porn Addictions Destroy Relationships

By Brittany Cooper

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Viewing adult pornography sites might be legal, but in relationships, some experts refer to the act of looking at porn as virtual infidelity.

Jaime's husband enjoyed watching porn, but over the years, their marriage took a down whirl spiral as his addiction led to other interests.

Jaime says, "when he would watch it, he would get me to watch it, it would lead to contacting swingers, it led to him stepping out cheating with multiple women, it led to those people who he stepped out with to drug use."

- "What was your final straw?

- "The drug use got to be so bad when we would be watching it, that he actually hit me and made me watch it while we were being intimate and he was using drugs at the same time. I felt that was putting my kids in jeopardy."

Jaime ended up losing her children for nearly two years and the marriage finally came to an end.

"I've seen marriages destroyed to the point of divorce, I've seen separations and it's not just men. A lot of people think it's just men, but it's both men and women that have these addictions," says John Copen, Celebrate Recovery.

Copen leads a recovery group and just like with other addictions, the first step in recovery is admitting you have a problem.

"It is a process, it's about coming clean and putting some accountability in your life," adds Copen.

The problem is, pornography is a secretive addiction.

Therapist Janice Hendrix of Suncrest Counseling shares that experience with us when she says, "some of the men I work with have been addicted to pornography since the time they were 8 or 12 years old and then it cycles through. They think they can white knuckle it and get through it and work it out on their own and we're finding that they need help."

An awareness leading to communication and honesty...a pathway to overcoming addiction.

Now if you or someone you know is battling a porn addiction, Celebrate Recovery meets Friday evenings at Lighthouse Christian Church. They have dinner at six followed by group sessions at seven.

Meanwhile, Hendrix's office is located in the Locust Grove Plaza in Twin Falls. She works for Suncrest Counseling, which is based out of Salt Lake City. Her number is (208) 944-2016.
