Shoshone, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) - On July 1, Interstate 84 will become the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway. The Idaho Transportation Department designed and constructed the signs which will be placed at each end of the highway and markers will be placed at intermediate sites along the highway. That according to Nathan Jerke with the State Transportation Department.

The bill for the designation was introduced to the Idaho Legislature on January 22 and signed by Governor Butch Otter on February 20. It will become effective on July 1. Local Senator Lee Heider sponsored the bill and helped to get it passed.

The I-84 Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway begins in Oregon and will run through Idaho. There are plans to eventually continue the designation into Utah.

Commemorative coins and patches are being sold to raise the funds necessary to purchase additional signs.

This year commemorates the 50th year for Vietnam war veterans who are honored for their service, valor and sacrifice.
