Idaho 'Concealed Carry' Permit Gets Enhancement

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) For many of us who live here in the west, guns are tools, and they need to be used safely. But it's important to make sure you're using your tools correctly.

A new state law is offering owners of concealed weapons some additional training options.

Beginning July first, Idaho gun owners will be able to apply for an enhanced permit related to concealed weapons.

Kayla Cuellar with Valiant Firearms and Ammunition says, “The governor signed into law House Bill 192. That allows for Idaho citizens and people wanting to apply for their Idaho Concealed Weapons Enhanced Permit.”

Valiant Firearms and Ammunition in Twin Falls will be hosting classes consisting of eight hours of class time. That's along with shooting 98 live rounds, and instruction in the “use of force” spelled out in Idaho law.

Chief Instructor Scott Denning says, “I teach my children and I teach other children that there is not a mystique to it. It's a tool, it's something that is treated with respect, that is treated with further training and education.”

The classes will cover gun safety, including how to handle, shoot, and maintain a weapon. The legal instruction must be given by either an attorney in good standing with the Idaho State Bar, or a law enforcement officer with a minimum of intermediate POST certification.

Gun owner Mike Cuellar says, “I also like the idea of being able to protect myself and my family, versus the alternative of having something happen, and being helpless to do anything about it.”

If you'd like to sign up for the next Concealed Weapons Enhanced Permit class, that's coming up Sunday April 28th from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
